These days, switching from a PC to a Mac is a relatively painless process. However, there are still times when you might like to play a game that is only available on Windows or access a work application that is not compatible with Macs. Though virtualization software can get the job done, these solutions are expensive if you just want to run the occasional app. WINE, because it's free and doesn't require a copy of Windows, is the easiest option for running Internet Explorer on your Mac whenever you need it.
IE6 runs decently. You can get IE7 working decently.
IE8+ can be troublesome. Even with all of that, it will not ever be 100% identical to Windows. If you really need to test web pages, you need VMs. You need to test in multiple OSes and in multiple browsers to find issues. Even doing something that works right in Windows Chrome may fail in Linux Chrome for example. I always try to test Mac OS X with Safari, Chrome and Firefox.
Windows with Chrome, Firefox, and IE. Linux with Chrome, and Firefox.
